Practical Driving Test

This is conducted by an examiner employed by the Driving Standards Agency. The examiner will check your eyesight. You must correctly read a vehicle number plate at a distance of 20.5M (67', or about 5 car lengths). It is extremely important to have regular eyesight checks throughout your driving career. You will then be asked a Show Me and a Tell Me question. A full list of possible questions is on this website.

The driving element of your test will be around 40 minutes. It will pass quickly. Treat the test as simply another lesson, as it forms part of the qualifying process. You will be asked to demonstrate that you can complete ONE manoveure to the required standard and complete the new Independant Drive element of the test. This 10 minute drive will have you completing a simple route, while being monitored by the examiner. You will NOT be marked down if you ask for a repeat of directions nor if you take the wrong road. You are being tested on your driving ability and NOT your ability to follow directions. The remainder of the drive will be directed by the examiner in the usual manner. You may be asked to perform a Controlled (Emergency) Stop.

Having your instructor in the car for your test can offer welcome support as we are on your side all the way. This is optional and your decision will be respected.

If you don't pass the test, use this as a learning experience. You can ask your instructor to listen to the examiners de-brief and this will help to structure remedial training in preparation for your next attempt.
