At the beginning of the practical driving test the examiner will ask one Show Me and one Tell me question. These questions were revised in July 2008 and appear below. Please feel free to print a copy for your study.

Show me how you would check that the directions indicators are working |
Apply the hazard warning switch and visually check all indicators.

Operate brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors or ask someone to help.

Show/explain how you would check the power assisted steering is working |
Apply gentle pressure on the steering wheel and start the engine. You should notice the wheel moving as the system powers up.

Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear. Make sure you keep safe control of the vehicle |
Apply footbrake firmly. Apply the parking brake so that when it is fully applied it secures itself and is not at the end of its working travel.

Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check the engine has sufficient oil |
Identify dipstick, describe removing and wiping, replacing and removing again. Oil level should be between the maximum/minimum marks

Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side

The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as comfortable.
